Whiting, Indiana, situated at the lower base of Lake Michigan, is the latest site of an oil spill from the British Petroleum Corporation, according to the Thinkprogress website.”
The amount of the oil leak from a BP refinery into Lake Michigan is unknown, but according to estimates, the area covered is some 5,000 square yards. One report from a TV news source said the amount was 500 gallons.
No action taken against BP by the EPA for the oil spill has been reported.
Lake Michigan is the main source of drinking water for some seven million residents of the greater Chicago area.
